Nike and Liverpool launch the club’s eye-catching third shirt for the new season, primed for upcoming European nights and drawing inspiration from European nights of Liverpool’s rich past.
The shirt sees a bold ‘Chrome Yellow’ colour adorned by ‘Rush Red’ features, creating a design strikingly similar to the Reds 2014/15 Away Kit. Although not featured since that campaign, the striking colour acts as an emblem for the club’s assosciation with yellow, having worn six different shirts of this nature in the memorable 1980s dynasty.
The same palette is used on the V-neck collar, with the chequered trim inspired by “the passion and energy of the Kop”, as the Club’s official website reads, in addition to “the chequered flags that first illuminated the Reds’ end of the stadium at the 1977 European Cup final, which then set a precedent for all future big European nights”
The jersey also features a subtle jacquard pinstripe pattern, inspired by the 81-85 away kit, further highlighting “the tight bond between the club and its community”.
On the nape of the neck, the 96-emblem encased by the eternal flames sits proudly in memory of the children, women and men who lost their lives at Hillsborough.
From the 2022/23 season onwards, the 96 emblem will change to 97 in recognition of Andrew Devine, the 97th person unlawfully killed as a result of the Hillsborough disaster. Unfortunately, it was not possible to change the emblems for the 2021/22 campaign.
Following on from the home and away kit, the jersey will be constructed with 100% recycled polyester fabric, made from recycled plastic bottles, and this applies to the jerseys the players will wear on the pitch as well as the replica jerseys worn by fans.
